Biological Effects of the Specific Iscador Mixing Process of Summer and Winter Mistletoe Extract
Die Wirkung von Medikamenten wie Iscador beruht nach dem Verständnis der anthroposophisch erweiterten Medizin nicht nur auf den Rezeptor-Wirkungen der anwesenden Moleküle, sondern auch auf einem Zusammenspiel verschiedener immaterieller Kräfte. Letztere für Arzneimittel zu bestimmen, muss sich eine anthroposophisch erweiterte pharmazeutische Analytik zur Aufgabe machen. Die vorliegenden Untersuchungen verstehen sich als ein Schritt in diese Richtung. Keimlinge von Kresse (Lepidium sativum L.) wurden in einer D6-Mischung von Sommer- und Wintermistelextrakten kultiviert, die entweder gemäss dem spezifischen Iscador-Mischverfahren präpariert oder einfach von Hand zusammengerührt wurden. Obwohl sich unmittelbar stoffliche Wirkungen der Mistelextrakte auf Kresse nur bis zu einer D2 nachweisen ließen, unterschieden sich die beiden Präparationen in einer D6 in bezug auf Spross- und Wurzelwachstum deutlich voneinander. Zur genaueren Bestimmung der Natur dieser Wirkungen sind aber noch weitere Experimente vonnöten.

According to the concepts of anthroposophical medicine, the action of remedies such as Iscador cannot be solely due to receptor binding effects of the molecules present in the solution. Effects due to non-material forces have to be taken into account, too. Anthroposophical pharmaceutical science has to develop analytical methods to investigate and determine such subtle forces. This paper reports on some first steps towards this goal. Seedlings of cress (Lepidium sativum L.) were cultivated in a 6x potency of a mixture of summer and winter mistletoe extract. This mixture was prepared either according to the specific Iscador machine mixing process or by a simple mixture done by hand. Direct material effects of Iscador upon cress growth could only be observed up to a 2x potency. Notwithstanding, machine and hand mixture could be clearly distinguished in the potency 6x by their effects on cress root and shoot growth. Exact determination of the nature of this effect requires additional experiments, however.
