The objective of the study described in this paper is to assess efficacy of classical homeopathic treatment in patients with neurodermatitis. The study follows the currently accepted scientific research standards as well as the needs of classical homeopathy. After a baseline-phase of four weeks all patients subsequently undergo an anamneses by a homeopathic doctor who selects the proper remedy according to the case and the characteristics of the patient, following the principles and guidelines of classical homeopathy.
Thereafter patients are randomly placed into placebo and verum groups and remain in the study for eight months. During this time they are only permitted to use indifferent exterrial ointments. The homeopathic doctor is free to change remedies, dosages or potencies depending on the reaction or case picture of the patient. The efficacy of the therapy will be statistically shown in comparison to the scorepoints of the multiparameter neurodermatitis score, which was assessed in each patient at the beginning and at the end of the study.
Effects of the treatment concerning the patient's ability to deal with the disease, his quality of life and other health problems in addition to his skin disease will be described and discussed. The design of this study is published in advance to give reviewers of the study the opportunity to verify if the study complies with the original plan. This is important because critical discussion of this study is to be expected.
