Abstract Methodological Aspects of the Evaluation of Efficacy of the Homeopathic Treatment of Menstrual Cycle Disorders

There is an ongoing discussion, of whether it is possible to determine the efficacy of homeopathic treatments, and what methodology should be used to do so. Our paper discusses - from a biometrical point of view - why menstrual cycle disorders are an inadequate subject for evaluating homeopathic constitutional therapy with individual remedies.

The common, randomised design makes it difficult to define adequate outcome criteria and probably leads to high levels of non-compliance. Common strategies for overcoming such problems, i.e. multicenter design and raised patient numbers, fail because of the specific circumstances of research in unconventional medicine. In our paper we explain the reasons for discontinuing our project.
